When both hands are on the job, you need a light that stays out of the way and lights the part you're working on. That matters under a sink, inside a cabinet, or when you're reaching behind equipment.

A portable flashlight set for tradespeople gives each person or tool bag its own light. Choose the set around the work: how you'll aim it, whether your hands stay free, and how many kits you need to equip.

Start with the work your crew does and the places your tools live. Then choose the number of lights, how they mount, and how you'll keep them ready.

1. Count working kits, not just people

A two-person crew doesn't always need exactly two lights. One person may carry a small service bag while another works from a larger toolbox. A shared vehicle may need a separate kit so its light doesn't leave with whoever borrowed it last.

Write down the kits that need to be ready at the same time. For each one, name the light's home: the side pocket of a bag, a case in a drawer, or a compartment in the service vehicle. That gives you a practical starting quantity.

  • One person, two regular work locations: consider a light assigned to each kit.
  • Several people working separately: count each person's kit before adding a shared spare.
  • A shared shop: decide which lights stay at a workstation and which travel to jobs.

Buy around the way your tools move. A larger pack helps only when the extra lights have a useful place to go.

2. Separate broad lighting from detail work

A portable work lamp can light the cabinet, bench, or equipment bay. Precision work lighting puts the light on the part you're handling. The two have different jobs.

Think about a fitting partly hidden behind a pipe. Moving an area light may help, but your hand can still block its beam when you reach in. A finger-mounted light starts the beam closer to that hand, so you can move it toward the detail you're trying to see.

DEX FingerLight® uses an adjustable Griptonite-TPU ring that fits on a finger or over gloves. Point your hand at the work and the light follows. For close-up jobs, that can be faster and easier than adjusting a headlamp to line up with your hands. For under-hood and under-dash examples, read our guide to portable LED lights for mechanics.

3. Test one light with the real gloves and tools

Use the sizing guide to check the fit before assigning lights to every kit. Wear your usual gloves, pick up the tool, and move through the position the job requires. Check whether the housing clears nearby parts and whether you can point the beam without changing a useful grip.

Also try the controls with those gloves. A light that works well on an open bench may be less convenient in a cramped space. Let the task decide where it belongs.

Follow the equipment's service procedures and keep wearable items clear of moving machinery. A task light doesn't change the precautions needed for the work.

4. Give every light a return-and-charge routine

Using the same lights across the crew keeps the controls and charging familiar. DEX recharges by USB-C and has preset Bright and Dim white-light modes plus Green mode.

Choose a regular charging spot and decide who checks the shared lights. At the end of the day, return each one to its assigned place, check it, and charge as needed. Keep the charging cable with the kit or at that charging station.

For close, reflective parts, try the lower white-light setting and adjust the beam angle. Use white light when the job depends on recognizing colored markings.

5. Compare the actual pack contents

Before ordering, compare the number of lights and the listed accessories for the exact option you select. A product photograph can show several items; the selected pack's description tells you what is included.

Our portable flashlight sets for tradespeople bring the current multi-pack options together. Choose the quantity around your crew and kits, then check the contents on the product page.

Flashlight set FAQs

Is a flashlight set useful for someone who works alone?

It can be if you keep separate kits in a workshop and service vehicle. Assigning a light to each location means you don't have to remember to move the same one between them.

Does every person need the same type of light?

Not necessarily. Match the light to the task. A set of the same model can make charging and controls familiar, while broad work lights and other mounts still serve different needs.

Can DEX fit over work gloves?

The adjustable ring is designed to fit over gloves. Try it with your own gloves and normal tool grip, and check clearance around the equipment.

Does a finger light replace a work lamp?

Keep an area light when you need broad coverage. A finger light adds a beam close to the detail your hand is working on.

Where can the crew learn the controls?

Start with the Quick Start Guide to learn the controls, and use the DEX FingerLight user manual for full operating and charging instructions. Walk through those controls before the light goes into a working kit.
